Simon’s Story
After a relationship breakdown, 49-year-old Simon moved in with his mum in Newcastle. When she became ill, he gave up plumbing work to care for her. After she passed away, he lost both her and their home, and spent nearly three months sleeping rough. As winter set in, Simon survived in alleyways and on buses, often going days without sleep. “I’ve had a tough life, but nothing prepares you for this. People have kicked me while I’m sleeping, I don’t deserve that.”
Then one freezing night, a stranger brought him blankets and connected him with Crisis at Christmas. At Crisis, Simon was given warmth, food and care, and met Marcus, the lead worker who helped him rebuild his life. With Marcus’s support, he moved into temporary accommodation, regained his confidence and rediscovered purpose through woodworking sessions. “It’s the first time someone actually believed in me.” Now, Simon has his own flat, works again as a plumber and keeps the wooden ornaments he made at Crisis as a reminder of how far he has come. “Thanks to Crisis, I’m rebuilding my life bit by bit. If I can get out of homelessness, so can anyone.”
